Freedom from Darkness means an end to all fighting. Being that I live in California, and the attack the other day was… Well, because no matter where in the world we live, it was unsettling. So I wanted to share with you a favorite dialog. It’s from the film, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (AZN assoc link). Since it fits the times – at least for me. I hope it does for you, too.
To you, Mr. Tolkien: Thank you for your stories. I hope you are looking in on us from whatever bright realm in which you reside now. With Bilbo, the Elves. My wonderful friend Billy. Who told me about Lord of the Rings. And who, I swear, really was one of the High Elves. To my dear loved ones all, in Summerland. Though unseen. Beyond thinnest veil. With the other lovely beings of Light…
When one day there is no darkness, no fight. A dream. Yet one to live for.
Frodo: I can’t do this, Sam.
Sam: I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened?
But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why.
But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam: That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo… and it’s worth fighting for.
However we gain our freedom from darkness.
Let terror, war and all strife end. However it’s spawned. Whomever is behind it. Let it be done. Best won when we fight it on the spiritual front. Because darkness one day can end. By the light of freedom. The light that makes us One.
